Introduction
For the second time Startup Live Hagenberg opened its gates for a crowd of highly motivated and innovative students of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria for Informatics, Communications and Media and the Johannes Keppler University Linz. Surrounded by nature the university sets the perfect stage for focusing on your studies, or, in our case, coming together and rocking Startup Live Hagenberg. Hagenberg as an IT-University also dictates our main focus, which is mobile applications and web services.
Tuesday
Yes, you heard right, Tuesday. “The early bird catches the worm”, and so we decided to start with a professional pitch training held by Michael Hirschbrich (CTO @ talenthouse.com). Together with our friends at Akostart we hosted this training exclusively for our pitching participants of the main event in order to provide them with the best possible preparation to engage the other participants. After some really good input from Michael, the participants held their pitches Silicon Valley-style and then braved the brutally honest feedback from the others.
Wednesday
Kickoff day started off shortly after midday and with the air buzzing from motivation, 62 participants checked in and we even had about 20 guests from Russia! After the opening presentation we heard 18 (!) highly energetic and well prepared pitches, each given exactly 90 seconds time. Following that, the participants were asked to stroll around, get to know the pitchers and find the best partners for awesome teams. Then the organizers assigned the teams places in two rooms and the work began!
Thursday
Right in the morning Lukas Fittl gave us his tried and tested Lean Canvas workshop, equipping the participants with the basic toolkit for developing their business model in the working session afterwards. Teams were given an early glimpse of the mentors for the afternoon on a big pin-wall and had the opportunity to express their interest to meet specific mentors. You can find a list of our kick-ass mentors here.
In the evening everyone was taken to the AMSEC, right in the heart of the Softwarepark Hagenberg and had the opportunity to participate in the interactive Finance Talk, a panel discussion focusing on how to finance your startup with expertise from both sides of the coin: people who had founded or accompanied startups, such as Fritz Höllerer (Co-founder @ Diagnosia), Stefan Kalteis (CEO @ payolution) and Christian Leeb (Business Angel & CVO @ Wappwolf) from the one side and Andreas Steiner-Posch (Senior Manager @ Ernst & Young) and Dietmar Kirchweger (Tech2b, International Incubator Hagenberg) from the other. The listeners then had the opportunity to get up close with the panel over dinner on the beautiful terrace of AMSEC with a beautiful view of Hagenberg.
Friday
On the big day there was nothing more left to do than prepare the final presentations to ensure high-energy performances! In the afternoon the teams could finally vent their energy and give their presentations to all participants and our top-of-the-pops jury with:
After the astonishing presentations the jury gave their feedback and filled out their scorecards which were then put into the highly sophisticated formula for the calculation of the winners and the first three happy teams are:
Actually Line Metrics won the challenge but participated besides the contest as they already won at Startup Live Krems and cleared the way for the other teams to run for the Pioneers Festival in Vienna.
The winners were announced at the “Maskenball Sinnesrausch” in Hagenberg’s beautiful castle, accompanied by a fire show and a fashion show of the Miss Austria Corporation. All of that just for our teams of course ;).
